Breast augmentation, also referred to as augmentation mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the size, shape, and overall appearance of the breasts. This cosmetic surgery involves the insertion of breast implants or the transfer of fat from other areas of the body to increase breast volume and improve symmetry. Breast augmentation is a popular choice for women who wish to address concerns such as small breast size, asymmetry between the breasts, or changes in breast volume and shape following pregnancy, weight loss, or aging.
During the breast augmentation procedure, the surgeon makes careful incisions in inconspicuous locations to minimize visible scarring. The implants, which may be filled with saline or silicone gel, are then inserted either behind the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle, depending on the individual’s anatomy and desired outcome. Fat transfer involves harvesting fat cells from one part of the body through liposuction, purifying them, and injecting them into the breasts to achieve the desired volume and contour.
Recovery from breast augmentation varies from person to person but generally involves some degree of swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the days and weeks following surgery. Patients are advised to follow post-operative instructions provided by their surgeon, including wearing a supportive bra and avoiding strenuous activities during the initial healing phase. While final results may take several weeks to become fully apparent as swelling subsides and the implants settle into position, breast augmentation can provide long-lasting enhancement and improved self-confidence for many individuals.
